O Lord, Teach Us to Pray

An offering of prayer over the anticipation and anxiety of election eve. May our kind Father align our hearts with His and again, graciously teach us to pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven

O Lord, You are God and King. You hold the world lovingly in Your hands. Despite the foolishness we have heaped up for ourselves, You are Lord, the Sovereign One.

Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come,

May the turmoil, confusion and straight up evil of these times drive many to You. Yours is the kingdom eternal. We rest, work, and dwell in You.

Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

It all feels outside our control. There seems to be no good choice. We are helpless in a fire of our own making. You are our only true hope.

Give us this day our daily bread

Teach us to step into today, to love today, to be loved today. May we surrender the rest to you.

And forgive us our debts

Forgive us for all the ways we have scorned and shamed and pitted against those of a differing political party. What do we know anyway, and how dare we be the ones to judge?

As we forgive our debtors.

Create in us a clean heart, a loving heart, a heart that understands our finite-ness. Teach us to find rest and peace from bitterness and to learn to love our enemies.

Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil.

Forgive us for so often living as though You are not King. Keep us from believing that November third’s outcome is our hope. Remind our forgetful hearts of Your goodness. Lead us away from bitter hearts and divided communities.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

“In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Ps 56:4) We are safe in the shadow of your wings. In You alone, we find refuge. We commit our souls and our communities and our country to You. Be glorified, somehow.

O Lord, teach us to pray.
